Marker Text: Cedar Grove Cemetery was originally established as a "colored cemetery" in the early nineteenth century on a tract of land adjacent to a trail that became known as Gap Creek Road. The remote and rocky terrain often required the use of dynamite to clear the area for burials. Resting today at Cedar Grove are some of Carter County's early African-American families, war veterans, church leaders, and Carter County's last known slave, the beloved Josephine "Aunt Jo" Taylor, a slave of Nat Taylor, the father of Alf and Bob Taylor, governors of Tennessee.
