In 1918, a group of well known inventors passed through Carter County while on their way to the Smoky Mountains  a camping trip. They jokingly called themselves "The Vagabonds". The men stopped in the are to visit a personal friend of one of the group who knew the president of Milligan College, Henry J. Derthick.
