Marker Text: Born in Happy Valley, Carter County, 1850; attorney; U.S. Congressman, 1879-1881; newspaper publisher; federal pension agent; Governor of Tennessee, 1887-1891. 1897-1899; lecturer, U.S. Senator, 1907 until his death in 1912; buried in Johnson City. In the gubernatorial campaign of 1886 he, a democrat, was opposed by his brother Alfred A Taylor, a Republican , in Tennessee's celebrated "War of the Roses".
