Marker Text: At Valley Forge, Dan Ellis usually assembled recruits for Federal regiments whom he guided over obscure mountain trails to Kentucky, while East Tennessee was under Confederate control. Born 1827, and a veteran of the Mexican War, he was subsequently captain, Co. "A" 13th Tennessee Cavalry, USA. He died in 1907, and is buried in the family cemetery, 14th District.
